Road Trip

Well I'm glad to report her sleeping schedule is getting better. Her nap times are consistent, but her bed time isn't as much but we're working on it. Last night I let her cry to sleep. I think that was the first time I did that. It was just so frustrating, she did not want to go to be. She was just to busy playing and having fun hanging out with mom and dad. So finally I had enough, I put her down and let her cry. I was surprised she only cried for five to seven minutes. I waited an extra five minutes after she was done crying just to make sure she was asleep.
Well either Friday or Saturday Maire and I are making our way to my parents house. My dad has to have surgery. This will be Maire's second trip down there. I'm kind of concerned on how she's going to do on a three hour car ride. I'm sure we're going to make some stops, but her being in that car seat all day is what is getting me.
On her first trip it was a breeze because she was so young she just slept and ate the whole way there. Now that she's seven months old and more attentive I'm kinda scared. She's always busy wanting to do something. At the same time I'm kinda excited because this is only her second time being away from home, so I hope she'll like it and have fun.

  1. I am sure she will have a lot of fun. She should be okay as long as you guys stop occasionally, and have something for her to do in the car. Who knows she might sleep the whole way down state. I hope everything works out to where you have a good time with your daughter.

  2. Hey Tiffany,
I can still remember those dreeded long trips in the car with Ali. My inlaws live about three hours away and that was always a fun trip. We would have to stop in Midland almost everytime. What I thought was worse than Ali crying, was her sleeping all the way home at night. We would be exhausted, just wanting to go to bed but Ali's ready to play until midnight. One thing that worked well for us is the D.V.D. player in the truck. Altought, that only worked for a while, Ali would get car sick, from watching T.V. That was a mess, sometimes setting off a chain of events. (I used to have a pretty weak stomach.) She can not even read in the car if it's moving. I'm really glad to hear Maire sleeping schedule is getting better.

  3. I remember one horrible trip with Gracie when she was maybe three months old. She and I were only going about an hour and a half away to see my sister who was in the Chicago area for a conference, but we hit terrible traffic on our way home. It took FOREVER, and she was in the back in her backwards-facing carseat screaming most of the way. I stopped and tried to feed her, but as soon as we started going again she just started screaming again. I remember my mom had said that no baby ever died from crying, so I just gritted my teeth and kept driving, but my nerves were shot by the time we got home. I felt like the world's WORST mother!

One thing I did as they got to be three or four(I think I got this idea from a parenting magazine)was put together a travel box. It was filled with all sorts of fun things that we only did when travelling--Color Wonder coloring books, stickers, pictures of animals cut out of magazines and glue sticks, fruit-smelling markers and paper, etc. I also packed lots of food. I know I am always happier when I'm not hungry so I figured they would be too! We've travelled by car a ton together--to Colorado a couple times, to North Carolina a couple times,to Florida a couple times, and to lots of places closer to home. I think they probably realize that they don't have a choice with travel so they might as well enjoy it! :-)

I have to say now that they are old (almost 8 and 10) they are a piece of cake to travel with. They mostly sit in the back and read or play crazy imaginary games with each other. So even if travel seems like a nightmare now for you, it definitely gets better!!
